About Air Niugini

Air Niugini is the national airline of Papua New Guinea, flying from Port Moresby to towns across the country and to Australia, Asia and the Pacific. In a country with few roads, its domestic flights are a lifeline. This guide covers power bank rules, check-in at Port Moresby, travelling in PNG and how it compares with Qantas and Fiji Airways.

Founded in 1973, it flies Airbus A220 jets, Boeing 737s and De Havilland Dash 8 turboprops. It started flights to Nadi in 2026.

Power Bank Rules on Air Niugini

New international (ICAO) rules apply from 27 March 2026:

  • Each passenger can carry up to two power banks, in cabin baggage only, never in checked bags.
  • Power banks cannot be charged on board, and you cannot use them to charge phones or other devices during the flight.
  • Up to 100 Wh needs no approval; 100–160 Wh needs approval from the airline. Keep them within reach, not in the overhead bin.

Check-In at Port Moresby

Arrive at least two hours before international flights and 90 minutes before domestic flights. Domestic and international flights use separate terminals at Jacksons Airport.

Families and Special Assistance

Infants under two travel on an adult’s lap, and pushchairs and car seats can usually be checked in free. Request wheelchairs and other special assistance at least 48 hours before the flight.

Travelling in Papua New Guinea

Flying is the main way to get around:

  • Most towns, including Lae and Mount Hagen, are not linked by road to Port Moresby.
  • Many visitors need a visa, which can be applied for online.
  • Arrange airport pickups in advance through your hotel.
