Africa World Airlines (AWA) is Ghana’s leading airline, flying from Accra to Kumasi, Tamale and Takoradi and to major cities in West Africa. Tickets include 5 kg of hand luggage plus a handbag and 23–30 kg of checked baggage. This guide covers power bank rules, check-in at Accra, domestic travel in Ghana and how it compares with Air Senegal and Ethiopian Airlines.
The airline was founded in 2010 and started flying in 2012. It has become the largest carrier in Ghana’s domestic market, flying Embraer regional jets on short routes across the country and the region.

Africa World Airlines follows the ICAO power bank rules in force worldwide since 27 March 2026:
Domestic flights leave from Terminal 2 at Kotoka International Airport, while international flights use Terminal 3. Arrive at least 90 minutes before domestic flights and three hours before international flights, and carry your passport or Ghana Card.
Infants under two travel on an adult’s lap. Families should check in early, as seats are assigned at the airport. Wheelchairs and other special assistance should be requested when you book.
Domestic flights save many hours on Ghana’s roads:
Fares rise around Christmas and Easter, when many Ghanaians travel home, so book early for these dates.
Flights use Embraer regional jets with two or three seats on each side of the aisle and no middle seat on some aircraft. Snacks and drinks are served on board. Overhead lockers are small, so larger bags may be checked at the aircraft door. Flights within Ghana are short, usually under an hour, so service is quick. Announcements are in English, and the crew can help with connections to international flights at Accra if you ask at check-in.
