About Regional Express (Rex)

Rex Airlines is Australia’s largest independent regional airline, flying Saab 340 turboprops from Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide and Townsville to dozens of country towns. Every fare includes a checked bag. This guide covers power bank rules, check-in, the airline’s 2025 takeover and how it compares with Qantas and Virgin Australia.

Founded in 2002 from the merger of two regional airlines, it entered administration in 2024 and ended its Boeing 737 city routes. US company Air T took it over in late 2025.

Power Bank Rules on Rex Airlines

Australian airlines banned the use of power banks on board from December 2025:

  • You cannot charge phones or other devices from a power bank during the flight, or charge the power bank itself.
  • Each passenger can carry up to two power banks, kept within reach (in the seat pocket or under the seat), not in the overhead bin.
  • Power banks must be in cabin baggage; up to 100 Wh needs no approval and 100–160 Wh needs approval.

Check-In at Regional Airports

Regional airports are small, so arriving 45 minutes before the flight is usually enough. In Sydney and Melbourne, arrive at least an hour early, as the regional gates can be a long walk.

Families and Special Assistance

Infants under two travel on an adult’s lap, and pushchairs and car seats can usually be checked in free. Request wheelchairs and other special assistance at least 48 hours before the flight.

Flying to Regional Australia

The airline reaches towns that bigger airlines don’t serve:

  • Broken Hill and Mount Isa are gateways to the outback.
  • Many routes are subsidised, so fares are fair for locals.
  • Some routes have changed because of fuel costs, so check the schedule.
