South Africa's low-cost airline, known for flying on time
Guide reviewed
Find the lowest fares and compare them with other airlines in one search.
FlySafair is South Africa’s biggest low-cost airline, flying between Johannesburg, Cape Town, Durban and other South African cities, plus a few regional routes. Every fare includes 7 kg of hand luggage and a personal item, checked bags are a paid extra, and the airline is known for being on time. This guide covers power bank rules, check-in, avoiding baggage fees and how it compares with South African Airways.
The airline was launched in 2013 by Safair, a South African aviation company with a long history of cargo and leasing work, and its first flights took off in 2014. It flies a fleet of Boeing 737-800 aircraft and has grown into the country’s largest domestic airline by passengers.

FlySafair follows the ICAO power bank rules in force worldwide since 27 March 2026:
Check that your power bank shows its watt-hour rating, and leave damaged or swollen ones at home.
Online check-in opens 48 hours before departure on the website and app, and you can keep your boarding pass on your phone. Bag drop closes 40 minutes before domestic flights, and boarding gates close 15 minutes before departure.
The airline boards from both ends of the aircraft at many airports, which makes boarding quick. Arrive early at Johannesburg and Cape Town, where security queues can be long on Friday and Sunday evenings.
Infants under two travel on an adult’s lap, and children’s seats can be booked next to their parents for a fee. Prams and car seats can usually be checked in free. Select special assistance when booking if you need a wheelchair or a medical device such as a CPAP machine.
Most extra charges come from baggage, so plan ahead:
All flights use Boeing 737-800s in a single economy cabin with six seats per row. Extra-legroom seats in the exit rows can be bought in advance.
Flights are short, so service is simple, with snacks and drinks sold from a trolley.
