Eurowings is the Lufthansa Group’s low-cost airline, flying from Düsseldorf, Cologne/Bonn, Hamburg, Stuttgart, Berlin and other bases across Europe, North Africa and the Middle East. BASIC includes a 40 × 30 × 25 cm personal item, SMART adds an 8 kg trolley and a 23 kg bag, and since January 2026 power banks cannot be used on board. This guide covers the fares, bag sizes, power bank rules, Miles & More and how Eurowings compares with Ryanair and easyJet.
Eurowings is the Lufthansa Group’s low-cost airline, with roots going back to 1993 and headquarters in Düsseldorf. It focuses on holiday and city routes from Germany and other European bases, and offers BIZclass with a free middle seat.

Since 15 January 2026, Eurowings applies the Lufthansa Group battery rules:
Online check-in is available on the website and app. German airports are busy during school holidays, so arrive at least two hours before departure.
Infants under two travel on an adult’s lap, and pushchairs can usually be checked at the gate free of charge. Small dogs and cats can travel in the cabin when booked ahead, and special assistance should be requested in advance.

All three are low-cost airlines with a free small bag and paid extras.

Düsseldorf Airport is close to the city centre. The SkyTrain connects the terminal with the long-distance railway station, and S-Bahn trains run to the city.
You can also book an airport transfer in advance at a fixed price.
Eurowings is a good low-cost option from Germany, with many holiday destinations and Miles & More miles. BASIC includes only a small bag, so add the extras you need before comparing prices.

Eurowings is not a member of Star Alliance, but it is part of the Lufthansa Group, and its flights earn Miles & More miles.
Eurowings works with other Lufthansa Group airlines, and some itineraries combine Eurowings and Lufthansa flights.
Eurowings' main bases are Düsseldorf (DUS), Cologne/Bonn (CGN), Hamburg (HAM), Stuttgart (STR) and Berlin (BER), with further bases across Europe.
Popular Eurowings routes link Düsseldorf, Cologne/Bonn and Hamburg with Palma de Mallorca, London, Vienna and other European cities. Many beach routes to Spain, Greece and the Mediterranean are seasonal and fly mainly in summer, and it is worth comparing Düsseldorf, Cologne/Bonn and Hamburg for the same destination. Eurowings sells three fares: BASIC, SMART and BIZclass. BASIC includes only a personal item; SMART adds a cabin trolley, a 23 kg checked bag and seat selection; BIZclass adds a free middle seat, fast lane at many airports and free changes. For a beach holiday with a suitcase, SMART is usually the best value.
BASIC is the least flexible fare: changes cost a fee plus any fare difference. EU261 rules cover long delays and cancellations.
On Basic fares, a seat is assigned at check-in unless you pay to choose; Smart and Biz include seat selection. BIZclass keeps the middle seat free and includes fast lane access at many airports.
Snacks and drinks are sold on board.
Every Eurowings fare includes a personal item of up to 40 × 30 × 25 cm that fits under the seat. A cabin trolley of up to 55 × 40 × 23 cm and 8 kg is included in SMART (two in BIZclass) and costs from about €21 per flight online on BASIC.
SMART includes one 23 kg checked bag and BIZclass two 32 kg bags. On BASIC, add a trolley or checked bag online when you book, as it costs more at the airport.
Eurowings flights earn Miles & More miles, the loyalty programme of the Lufthansa Group. Miles can be spent on Eurowings, Lufthansa Group and Star Alliance flights.
The airline's two-character IATA code is EW. It appears in flight numbers (for example EW 101), on tickets and on airport departure boards. Its three-letter ICAO code is EWG, which air traffic control and flight-tracking services use to identify the airline.
It is not a member of a global airline alliance, although it may still have codeshare or interline agreements with individual airlines.
The airline is headquartered in Düsseldorf, Germany.
The airline was founded in 1993.
Its main hubs and focus cities are: Düsseldorf (DUS) – Main Base.
