Aegean Airlines is Greece’s largest airline and a Star Alliance member, connecting Athens, Thessaloniki and the Greek islands with Europe and the Middle East. GoLight includes an 8 kg cabin bag or a personal item, not both, while Flex adds both plus a 23 kg checked bag. This guide covers the fares, baggage, power bank rules, Athens tips, Miles+Bonus and how Aegean compares with Lufthansa and Ryanair.
Aegean was founded in 1995, began scheduled flights in 1999 and bought Olympic Air in 2013. Together the two airlines reach more Greek airports than any other carrier, and Aegean still serves food and drink on many short flights.

Aegean follows the ICAO rules applied by European airlines since 27 March 2026:
Larger batteries need the airline’s approval, so check before you fly.
Online check-in is available on the website and app. All flights at Athens use the main terminal, but queues are long in July and August, so arrive two hours before European flights.
Request special assistance or sports equipment in advance through My booking.
Infants under two travel on an adult’s lap, and pushchairs can usually be checked at the aircraft door. Request special assistance at least 48 hours before departure.

All three fly between Greece and the rest of Europe, with very different bag rules on the cheapest fares.

Athens International Airport is about 35 km from the city centre. The metro and suburban railway connect the airport with Syntagma and Piraeus, and express buses run around the clock.
You can also book an airport transfer in advance at a fixed price.
Yes. Aegean is one of the best choices for Greece, with the widest Greek network, a modern Airbus fleet, Star Alliance connections and better onboard service than most short-haul airlines. Watch the one-bag rule on GoLight.

Facts checked in October 2026 against a 2026 Aegean baggage summary and ICAO’s 2026 power bank rules. Rules change, so check the official Aegean website before you travel.
Aegean has been a Star Alliance member since 2010, so you can connect from Greece onto partners such as Lufthansa, Swiss, Turkish Airlines and United on a single ticket and earn Miles+Bonus across the alliance.
Learn more about Star AllianceAegean's sister airline Olympic Air operates many domestic and island routes, and Aegean codeshares with several Star Alliance partners on flights to and from Greece.
Athens International Airport is Aegean's main hub. Thessaloniki serves northern Greece and Larnaca is Aegean's base in Cyprus, while island airports such as Heraklion, Chania and Rhodes see many extra flights in summer.
Aegean's most popular routes link Athens with Thessaloniki, Cyprus and the Greek islands, plus busy city routes to London, Paris and Rome. In summer, seasonal flights link European cities directly with Crete, Rhodes, Mykonos, Santorini, Corfu and Kos, so you can often skip Athens. Choose a route to see recent schedules and fares.

Aegean sells Economy in three fare families: GoLight, Flex and ComfortFlex, with a separate Business fare. GoLight is the cheapest, with only a cabin bag or personal item and the strictest rules. Flex adds a 23 kg checked bag and lets you change your flight without a rebooking fee, and ComfortFlex adds more flexibility on top.
Whenever you change, you pay any difference in fare. If you need a bag or your plans may move, Flex often costs only a little more than GoLight plus an added bag.
On GoLight fares, choosing a standard seat in advance costs a few euros. Flex and ComfortFlex include standard seat selection for free, and Business includes a Business seat at the front of the cabin, where the middle seat is kept free on most flights.
You can add bags, seats, extra legroom and meals in My booking. Aegean is known for serving food on many of its flights, even on short routes.
Aegean is strict about cabin bags. Every Economy fare allows one cabin bag of up to 8 kg and 56 × 45 × 25 cm, but on GoLight you can bring either the cabin bag or a small personal item, not both. Flex and ComfortFlex allow both, and on Olympic Air turboprops the cabin bag limit is 55 × 40 × 23 cm.
GoLight includes no checked bag, while Flex and ComfortFlex include one 23 kg bag and Business two 32 kg bags. Extra bags cost much less online than at the airport, and flights to Saudi Arabia have their own allowances.
Miles+Bonus is Aegean's free loyalty programme. You earn miles on Aegean, Olympic Air and Star Alliance flights and with partners, and redeem them for award tickets and upgrades.
It has three tiers: Blue, Silver and Gold. Miles+Bonus is also known among travellers as one of the easier programmes for reaching Star Alliance Gold status.
The airline's two-character IATA code is A3. It appears in flight numbers (for example A3 101), on tickets and on airport departure boards. Its three-letter ICAO code is AEE, which air traffic control and flight-tracking services use to identify the airline.
It is a member of Star Alliance. Alliance membership usually means easier connections, shared lounge access for eligible passengers and the option to earn and redeem miles across partner airlines.
The airline is headquartered in Athens, Greece.
The airline was founded in 1995.
Its main hubs and focus cities are: Athens (ATH) – Main Hub; Thessaloniki (SKG) – Hub; Larnaca (LCA) – Hub (Cyprus).
The frequent flyer programme is called Miles+Bonus. Members earn points or miles on eligible flights and can redeem them for award tickets, upgrades and other benefits.
