About Gulf Air

Gulf Air is the national airline of Bahrain, flying from Bahrain International Airport to the Middle East, Europe, the Indian subcontinent and Asia. Economy fares include a 6 kg cabin bag, most fares include checked baggage, and it is a convenient connection point between Europe and Asia. This guide covers power bank rules, check-in in Bahrain, stopovers and how it compares with Qatar Airways and Oman Air.

The airline traces its history to 1950, making it one of the oldest airlines in the Middle East. It flies Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners on long-haul routes and Airbus A320neo and A321neo jets on regional routes.

Power Bank Rules on Gulf Air

Gulf Air follows the ICAO power bank rules in force worldwide since 27 March 2026:

  • Carry power banks in cabin baggage only, never in checked bags.
  • Up to 100 Wh is allowed without approval; 100–160 Wh needs approval from the airline.
  • A maximum of two power banks per passenger, kept within reach; no charging them, or devices from them, during the flight.

Check-In in Bahrain

Online check-in opens 24 hours before departure on the website and app. Arrive at least three hours before international flights, as check-in counters close 60 minutes before departure.

Business passengers can use the Falcon Gold Lounge, and passengers in a hurry can use the self-service bag drop at the terminal.

Bahrain’s modern terminal opened in 2021 and is compact, so connections are usually quick.

Families and Special Assistance

Infants under two travel on an adult’s lap, and bassinets can be requested on long-haul flights. Wheelchairs and other special assistance should be requested at least 48 hours before the flight.

Children travelling alone can use the airline’s escort service, which should be booked at least 48 hours before departure.

Stopovers in Bahrain

Bahrain is a small island kingdom, so a short stopover is easy to plan:

  • The airport is about 10 km from central Manama.
  • Many nationalities can get a visa on arrival or an eVisa.
  • Popular sights include the Bahrain Fort, the souq and the Formula 1 circuit.

Gulf Air often runs fare sales on routes between Europe and Asia via Bahrain, so it is worth comparing these connections with direct flights.

How to Find Cheap Gulf Air Flights

Arriving in Bahrain

Bahrain International Airport is on Muharraq Island, about 10 km from Manama. Taxis, ride-hailing apps and buses link the airport with the city, and the King Fahd Causeway connects Bahrain with Saudi Arabia.

Bahrain is also a gateway to eastern Saudi Arabia: the King Fahd Causeway links the island with Dammam and Al Khobar, about an hour’s drive away, so some travellers fly to Bahrain instead of Dammam.

You can also book an airport transfer in advance at a fixed price.

Is Gulf Air a Good Airline?

Yes. It offers a modern Dreamliner fleet, a quiet hub with quick connections and fares that often undercut larger Gulf airlines, though its network is smaller.

Falcon Gold Business Class on the Dreamliner has lie-flat seats with direct aisle access, making it a good-value option for long-haul trips via Bahrain.
