About LATAM Airlines

LATAM Airlines is the largest airline group in Latin America, flying from Santiago, São Paulo, Lima and Bogotá across South America and to North America, Europe and Oceania. The Basic fare includes only a personal item, Standard adds a 23 kg bag, and in 2026 LATAM banned power bank use on board. This guide covers the fares, bag sizes, power bank rules, LATAM Pass and how LATAM compares with Avianca and Copa.

LATAM was formed in 2012 when Chile’s LAN and Brazil’s TAM combined; LAN’s history goes back to 1929. It is based in Santiago and runs domestic airlines in Chile, Brazil, Peru, Colombia and Ecuador.

LATAM Power Bank Rules

LATAM applies strict rules on all flights:

  • A maximum of two power banks per passenger, each up to 100 Wh; larger ones are not allowed.
  • Carry them in your personal item under the seat in front, never in the overhead bins or checked bags.
  • Do not use a power bank to charge any device during the flight, and do not plug it into the aircraft’s sockets.
  • If your cabin bag is checked at the gate, take out the power bank and keep it with you.

Check-In at LATAM’s Hubs

Online check-in is available on the website and app. Many South American airports carry out document checks for international flights, so allow time at the counter.

São Paulo–Guarulhos and Lima are very busy, so arrive at least three hours before international departures.

Families and Special Assistance

Infants under two travel on an adult’s lap, and bassinets are available on long-haul flights. Small pets can travel in the cabin on many domestic flights, and special assistance should be requested in advance.

Arriving in Santiago

Santiago’s airport is about 17 km from the city centre. Airport buses, taxis and ride-hailing apps connect it with the city.

You can also book an airport transfer in advance at a fixed price.

Is LATAM Airlines a Good Airline?

Yes. LATAM has the biggest network in South America, comfortable long-haul aircraft and a valuable partnership with Delta. Basic fares include only a personal item, so add what you need before comparing prices.

For more options, see our Delta guide, our airline guides and the FlightSelects travel blog.

Facts checked in October 2026 against LATAM’s restricted items page, Pontos pra Voar on the power bank rules and a 2026 baggage summary. Rules change, so check the official LATAM website before you travel.
