ITA Airways is Italy’s flag carrier, flying from Rome Fiumicino and Milan Linate across Italy and Europe and to the Americas, Africa, the Middle East and Asia. Since 1 April 2026 it is part of Star Alliance and uses Miles & More, and even its Light fare includes an 8 kg hand bag. This guide covers the fares, baggage, power bank rules, Rome tips and how ITA compares with Lufthansa and Iberia.
ITA Airways began flying on 15 October 2021, the day after Alitalia stopped operating, and kept the famous AZ code. The Lufthansa Group bought a stake in 2025, and on 1 April 2026 ITA joined Star Alliance and replaced its Volare programme with Miles & More.

Since mid-January 2026, ITA crews have announced new power bank rules on board:
ITA had not published the full rules online when we checked, so follow crew instructions and assume, as on other Lufthansa Group and European airlines, that you should not charge devices from a power bank during the flight.
Online check-in opens 24 hours before departure on the website and app. At Rome Fiumicino, most flights use Terminal 1, while some long-haul flights use Terminal 3.
Allow at least two hours for European flights and three hours for long-haul departures.

All three are major network airlines in Southern and Central Europe.

Rome Fiumicino is about 30 km from the city centre. The Leonardo Express train reaches Roma Termini in about 32 minutes, and regional trains and buses are cheaper options.
You can also book an airport transfer in advance at a fixed price.
