TAP Air Portugal is Portugal’s flag carrier and a Star Alliance member, flying from Lisbon and Porto across Europe and to Brazil, Africa and North America. Every fare includes a full-size cabin bag, Basic and Classic add a 23 kg bag, and long trips can include a free Portugal Stopover. This guide covers the fares, baggage, power bank rules, the stopover, Miles&Go and how TAP compares with Iberia and LATAM.
TAP was founded in 1945 and is based in Lisbon. It has one of the largest networks between Europe and Brazil and strong links with Portuguese-speaking Africa.

TAP follows the ICAO rules applied by European airlines since 27 March 2026:
Larger batteries need the airline’s approval, so check before you fly.
On eligible journeys between continents, TAP lets you stop in Lisbon or Porto for several days at no extra airfare. It is an easy way to add Portugal to a trip between Europe and Brazil or North America.
Add the stopover when you book on TAP’s website, and check which routes and dates qualify.
Online check-in is available on the website and app. Lisbon Airport can be crowded at peak times, so allow time for passport control when connecting to Brazil and North America.
Families can add infants and children to one booking, and bassinets are available on long-haul flights. Request wheelchairs and other special assistance at least 48 hours before departure.

All three compete on flights between Europe and South America.
